Day 1 at Bright Hope Baby Sanctuary

We don’t quite have the jeg-lag thing licked yet.  Mark was waking us up at 5 am, convinced it was time to wake up. His reasoning?  He could hear a rooster crowing!  We spent the day with Bereket and friends at the baby home.  When we first walking in, it was a little rocky.  He was half-hiding behind Tegist’s leg, facing the other way.  After a few minutes, Tegist encouraged Darcie to pick him up and take him upstairs to a quiet room with a great view and with several books. He wasn’t happy at first but soon settled in for a sweet time.

Mark and I got the cold shoulder for a bit longer.  It was at mid-morning coffee and popcorn that we made progress.  He started feeding popcorn to Tegist, then to Darcie, then to Mark and I.  By the afternoon he was laughing with us, allowed me to hold him, and let Mark hold his hand as they walked around the building.  His warming up to us was a very pleasant surprise, and we’re excited about tomorrow.

For dinner we had a special Christmas buffet at the Sheraton (which is spectacular).  The food was great, but Mark’s 5am wakeup time finally caught up to him.  He was sound asleep during the main course!

  1. Praise the Lord for His hand of guidance, protection and fusing together your family.

If Faith had to pick a favorite today, it would be Rick...because he is nice. He won her over with M&M's and french fries.

Through our eyes, Bereket's hesitancy is a blessing. I know Darcie read this several times, but the stronger the first attachments are the stronger the second attachment will be. How blessed that he has learned to bond. As hard as it is now, it will be a major blessing in years to come. Praise the Lord for answered prayers.

Mark: Hang in there! Soon you will be on Ethiopian time. Just think how sleepy Bereket is going to be on Texas time. :) You'll be such big help to him when he gets home.

    Love, the Zimmers

  2. I am sure that was a lovely feeling, his little hand in yours. What a sweet start to your life together! It will be good to have the days together to adjust and get to know one another at least a little. Hope you are well rested for the remaining days. We love you all. Merry Christmas! The Flippins

  3. What a blessed time in your lives. We especially loved the picture of Darcie sitting with Bereket in her arms with a book...the beginning of many times like this. We wish you all the happiest Christmas of your lives with your precious children.

Mark, you are doing great!! Just wait till you and baby brother get back to Texas. You'll have lots of things to show him.

    Love to all,
    Aunt Sissy & Uncle Sam
